![]() Shenmue 3 runs north of 30 frames per second at least, but a frame-rate cap should be an option here - at the very least, it would bring the experience into line with the original titles. Watch on YouTube Our video review of the indie miracle that is Shenmue 3. However, both console versions run with an unlocked frame-rate that delivers a stuttering, highly variable experience. Resolution is lower than expected at 864p on the base console and 1080p on PS4 Pro, but still looking fine overall thanks to Unreal Engine 4's excellent temporal anti-aliasing solution. ![]() All pre-launch marketing and demos have been on PC and the launch was actually our first chance to look at the game running on PlayStation 4 consoles. The multi-platform side of the equation is where I feel Shenmue 3 does actually disappoint. From triple-A blockbuster with a ginormous budge to indie development, Shenmue has changed, Suzuki has changed - and today's games industry is a very, very different place. With a presumably smaller budget and fewer resources, Ys Net has selected to utilise third party technology in the form of Unreal Engine 4 to produce the game for multiple, established platforms - a night and day shift from Shenmue's origins. It was one of the most expensive games ever produced at time of its release - a truly lavish production built on a proprietary engine designed for cutting-edge console technology.Īlmost two decades later, the world in which Shenmue 3 has released is a very different place indeed. Its announcement and subsequent arrival on Dreamcast were quite an event - the culmination of everything Sega-AM2 had learned throughout its storied history. However, it's also a sequel produced very much as an indie production with limitations that impact the scope of the project, and by extension, how refined the game actually is.Ī lot has changed since the original Shenmue was released. This is Shenmue viewed through a modern lens, which is absolutely fine. Its sheer being is something to be treasured, but fundamentally, is it actually a good game and a worthy sequel? I'd say that the results are mixed. It's a miracle that I'm now playing a modern sequel to a game that came out 18 years ago, a game that was - by all financial criteria - a major flop. It's an impossible sequel, a game that shouldn't really exist owing to a whole host of reasons, but somehow here it is. Shenmue 3 is something very different, but equally as unlikely. At Digital Foundry we've talked about 'impossible ports' before - games like Doom 2016 and The Witcher 3 on Switch that seem to deny technological limitations and still bring the essence of the original experiences to a new audience.

My mind would race and the more it raced the less connected I would be with the pleasure in my body. When it came to getting off with a partner, I used to feel a huge amount of pressure to come and come fast. If you’d like an intro to a basic MM practice, you can find it here.įor some people, myself included for many years, orgasms can be a source of great anxiety. These practices are also a way to connect more deeply with your own beautiful body, while enjoying the sexual goodness that it holds. MM empowers you to map your pleasure, so that you can give clear directions to your partners. It helps you to be more present with whatever tickles your fancy.īy practicing on your own, you can learn what turns you on, and what doesn’t. MM doesn’t need to replace your tried and true solo-sex activities. There are endless versions of what MM can be, because ultimately, it’s just about being present while you masturbate, or engage in other kinds of self-pleasure. I started my journey to embodied sex with mindful masturbation (MM), and that’s also where I start many of my clients. And here’s a guided practice to use during sex! Mindful Masturbation If embodied sex sounds a lot better than disembodied sex, read more about it here. But once I started to learn to really feel the sensations of sex everything changed. I was experiencing only a small percentage of how amazing sex can be in its totality. I loved sex and had a great time expressing my sexuality, I just wasn’t fully there for the expression. I had a lot of really good (even amazing) sexual experiences before I consciously started bringing mindfulness in. Read more about my first time and how mindfulness eventually entered the scene. I was high and don’t remember much, and that was the beginning of a bunch of years unmindful sex. I kept my turquoise All-Star high tops on the whole time. It happened in the backseat of a hot rod car-I think it was a green Chevelle-with an 18-year-old dude with a ponytail. In fact, my story began when I was fourteen and decided it was high time to lose my virginity. I wasn’t always so mindful when it came to sex. It’s a worthy endeavor, one that I am so grateful for. The process of becoming more awake in the realm of sexuality is full of highs and lows and twists and turns, just like the rest of life. There are good and noble reasons that monastics, and some meditation practitioners, choose celibacy-but what about the rest of us? If we hope to continue to awaken, we must bridge the gap between our spiritual lives and our sexual lives. This is a shame because awakening can’t touch many of the places inside of us that we repress or ignore. Sex gets cut out, sterilized, or compartmentalized in many spiritual traditions. What? Mindful and ethical porn? Yep, read more about it here.īringing mindfulness into your sex life is also another way to deepen your spiritual path and awaken more fully. And by the way, watching porn can be done mindfully, and ethically, too. If it’s consensual and you are present for it, it can be mindful sex. Mindful sex can also be a hard, fast fuck in your kitchen with a friend with benefits, or even a one-night-stand. I want to mention that having mindful sex doesn’t mean you must be breathing in sync, gazing into your partners left eye, and barely moving your body, while surrounded by rose petals, with the scent of essential oils wafting through the room (although this can be really wonderful!). I’ve seen mindful sex lead to massive healing and sexual awakening. Mindfulness can also be a wonderful compliment to therapy for sexual trauma. You can also use mindfulness and meditation tools to address blocks and issues in your sex life and sexual expression, including erectile disfunction, low desire, communication challenges, body insecurities, and so much more. Through this practice you can experience more pleasure and more connection. ![]() Mindful sex is the practice of actually being present for sex. This is an in progress work based on my decompilation of the first Ultima game (not counting Akalabeth). So testing it further, and seeing whether I can get it to use the common Lua code is going on a back burner until I’ve finished testing Pagan. The funniest part was that it would create a fictional name, by randomizing and concatenating several lists of word segments. It would then list the resulting stats on the planet so that designers could use them in the game. You would fill in a cell to tell it what class of star the planet would be orbiting, then the system would start working through a sequence of planet building: randomized distance from the star, appropriate composition, atmosphere, etc – referring to various available charts and graphs about composition probabilities and temperatures etc. It was crude, and not meant to withstand any serious scientific scrutiny, but it was based on some basic astronomical and mathematical principles that provided reasonably believable results. To get us started, I made an excel file that would spit out random planets, along with a made-up name and statistics about its size, orbital period, surface temperature etc. ![]() How much of this was based on information about real exoplanets that have been discovered? If the information is fictional, how was it created?ĬH: The sheer number of planets we would need to create for the Mass Effect universe and its various exploration systems required us to develop a more automated means of generating them. There are many such planets in the Mass Effect games, and there’s a lot of detail about their properties. SM: One of the biggest emerging fields in astronomy is the study of exoplanets (planets orbiting stars besides our own Sun). Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/ESA/Harvard-Smithsonian CfA Spiral galaxy M81, captured in ultraviolet, visible, and infrared light ![]() So even though it appears you are flying past the Horsehead Nebula, you’re actually navigating in between several gauzy layers of paintings created by BioWare artists. These individual 2-D images are typically painted in photoshop, then are combined in the graphics engine to create a sense of depth and parallax. In the game however, players typically move through the galaxy in a 3-D perspective, so we paint unique art assets that can be assembled to create the illusion of a galaxy with stars, nebulae, etc. SM: Is the imagery used in the games, especially in the Galaxy Map, based on real astronomical imagery? If so, what was the source? (The first time I saw the Galaxy Map, I was convinced that I spied data from the Hubble Space Telescope!)ĬH: The imagery in the Mass Effect universe is inspired by real-life photos, ranging from orbital photographs from the shuttle, to wide field Hubble images. If real-life astronomy can reveal such stunning ideas and imagery, that gives us a certain creative license to suggest that reality will continue to be stranger than fiction. The underlying idea was that real-life scientific discoveries consistently create imagery and concepts that blow away previous notions of what is possible, from the surprising effects of dark matter on the universe, to the thick veils of purple atmosphere around Titan. Part of the goal with the Mass Effect universe was to set it in the real world, so that even as we created storylines of epic scale and exotic science-fiction themes, it would all appear to be an extension of the astronomy that you can read about today. How did you choose the objects to include in the game – real and fake?Ĭasey Hudson: We tried to include real-life locations wherever possible, such as famous nebulae, stars, the moon etc. Many others appear to be made up entirely. Some of the places that you can zoom through or visit are real astronomical objects (like the Horsehead Nebula, Eagle Nebula, and Hourglass Nebula). Sara Mitchell: The “geography” of Mass Effect is an interesting mix of realism and fiction. Increasingly curious about the astronomy within the Mass Effect universe, I contacted BioWare and had my questions answered by the series’ Executive Producer, Casey Hudson. Livio and the Hubble 20th Anniversary Team (STScI) The Carina Nebula, captured by the Hubble Space Telescope Some of the astronomical objects featured in the game are even real ones! I began to suspect that the game’s developers may have had some serious NASA-based inspiration. Compare the fictional “Kite’s Nest” from the game (above) to Hubble’s shot of the Carina Nebula (below). You can explore nebulae and star systems, collect data about exoplanets… and so much of the imagery looks like something straight from a NASA press release. While the plot of the games is solidly science fiction, the setting has an impressive level of realism. It should be a different print in each section of the block, but I have doubled up on these. However I did encounter a problem when I got to the end stage and laid my blocks out on the floor.
